The United States Emerges as the Most Important Overseas Market for Chinese Short Dramas
According to a report by CCTV Finance, Chinese short dramas have shown remarkable performance in international markets in recent years. As of August 2024, data from leading overseas short drama applications indicate that the United States generated $151 million in revenue, accounting for 64.8% of the total income, making it the most significant overseas market for Chinese short dramas.
Popular genres among American audiences include urban romance, historical legends, and suspense thrillers. Notably, some hit short dramas, such as “Time Adventures” and “Mystery at Dawn,” have ranked among the top ten on several major U.S. streaming platforms.
Peter Sun, CEO of FFTV Online Media and President of the Hollywood Film & Short Drama Association, stated that the unique advantages of Chinese short dramas in terms of duration, narrative pacing, and production quality cater to the American audience’s demand for high-quality, short-form entertainment content. Additionally, global marketing strategies and precise recommendations from streaming platforms have further fueled this trend. Leveraging the association’s unique position in Hollywood, plans are underway to assist Chinese companies, investors, producers, creators, and actors seeking overseas development in the short drama sector, aiming for mutually beneficial collaborations.
